Creating Web Sites with Frames Notice that this code passes the window.external.addFavorite method a URL of document.location and a shortcut description of document.title. The document.location property always contains the URL of the current Web page, and the document.title property always contains the text you assign that page in the Title box of the Page Properties dialog box. Using these properties rather than hard-coded values means that you can insert the script in any page you want without modifying it. Just make sure you assign each page a meaningful title; otherwise, your visitors will end up with shortcuts to pages like New Page 2. You can use Code view to insert this code, surrounded by <script> and </script> tags, anywhere on a Web page you want an Add To Favorites hyperlink to appear. After returning to Normal view, you can drag its JavaScript icon to different locations on the page, and you can even copy the code and then paste it into other pages. To view the code and make corrections, either double-click the JavaScript icon or return to Code view.

The scripting techniques described in this section provide elegant and relatively simple solutions to real-world problems. At the same time, they clearly illustrate some of the disad vantages of using frames. If frames themselves were a simple and elegant solution, none of this scripting would be necessary. Before you launch into designing a frames-based site, consider using shared borders, link bars, Include Page components, or dynamic templates to replicate headings, menus, and other elements throughout the site. This often produces results that are just as easy to use and clearly easier to maintain than a frames-based site.

When you create a frames page, the entire browser window must consist of frames. This can be overkill if you just want to scroll one unit of content in an ordinary Web page. In such a case, an inline frame might serve admirably. An inline frame works like one frame in a frames page, but it s an element you can place in an ordinary Web page.

If you send a lot of digitally signed messages, you ll want to con gure your security options to include a digital signature by default; see the following section for details. In addition, you might want to add a button to the toolbar to let you quickly sign the message without using a dialog box.

Adding an inline frame to a Web page is a simple process when you re using FrontPage. The procedure is much like that for inserting any other element, such as a picture. Here it is:

To save time, you can con gure your security settings to apply globally to all messages, changing settings only as needed for certain messages. In Outlook 2007, choose Tools, Trust Center, and then click E-Mail Security. On the E-Mail Security page, shown in Figure 14-11, you can set security options using the following list as a guide.
