This section examines a few alternative strategies to implementing stateful business processing, as well as some issues you may need to consider when using them The first alternative to stateful beans is replacing them with a combination of persistence and stateless processing In this scheme, we essentially move state information from memory to the database on every request You should carefully examine whether you want to maintain state between conversations in memory Base your decision completely based on your application requirements and how much tolerance of failure you have For example, in the BidderAccountCreator EJB you can probably avoid the use of conversational state by not maintaining instance variables to store the user information in memory and save data in the database on each method call Second, you may choose to build some mechanism at the client side to maintain state.

The webform module includes a number of available data-entry fields, as shown in Figure 7-27. If all fields are selected, then all fields will be available to be added to a web form.

Some browsers will show you the output of the XML rather than the code itself. If you end up seeing only video1.wmv video1.jpg video2.wmv video2.jpg video3.wmv video3.jpg video4.wmv video4.jpg in your browser, right-click and click View Source to see the XML code that you can then copy and paste into your own XML file.

So when you need to maintain state in your applications and your clients are Java SE clients, then the first two options we discussed earlier may be more difficult to implement. Hence, stateful session beans are probably the only viable option as long as you carefully weigh the performance considerations we outlined earlier. We ll close our discussion on session beans by outlining some best practices for session beans that you can use to build your application s business logic.
