manually encoded with the URL data This means a lot of extra work for you, so URL rewriting is worthwhile only if you want to support browsers without cookies If you enable both URL rewriting and cookies, the way session management takes place depends on the way your servlets are coded If a servlet includes logic for encoding URLs, all session management is based on URL rewriting, regardless of the Enable Cookies setting If you do not include code for explicit URL rewriting in your servlet, and you select Enable Cookies, then cookies are used as long as the client Web browser is willing to accept them If the Web browser has cookies disabled, and you have not implemented URL rewriting code in the servlets, then both Enable Cookies and Enable URL Rewriting are ignored, as neither can be utilized You can also enable or disable protocol switch rewriting, which tells WebSphere whether it should propagate the session information when it needs to switch between a secure and a nonsecure connection (or vice versa) Another option supported by WebSphere is Secure Socket Layer (SSL) session management, in which session information is transported over an SSL connection This method has the added benefit or security integration; authenticated users are associated with their session information Finally, the option for Persistent Sessions means that persistent sessions are stored in a database; thus their lifespan exceeds that of the server process So, for example, sessions can still persist in case of a shutdown In other words, if a server goes down and comes back up again, enabling this option allows the server to resume where it left off without having to break off client sessions Persistent sessions are also useful for maintaining user sessions over prolonged periods of time, and they play a role in session tracking in a clustered environment, as explained in the section "Sessions in a Clustered Environment," later in the chapter Persistent sessions are often viewed as inferior because of possible performance degradation during a session After all, instead of all session management occuring in memory, disk accesses are required Nevertheless, persistent sessions are important in many business applications and business scenarios because sessions persist through server shutdowns; this feature is important when user session information is critical Sometimes the session object maintains only the context in which the application is serving a user Other times the session information also includes data that has been built up in a long application session or between a few application screens In this case, unless the application specifically takes care of this persistence, using persistent sessions can be a way to avoid slowing down the system and frustrating users Another scenario in which persistent sessions can be useful involves mobile devices Mobile computing platforms typically have two modes: applications that work online and require constant access to the central servers, and applications that have enough logic in the mobile device to communicate with the central database using synchronizations In the latter case, it may be that a user synchronizes with the central server at 9:00 AM and then starts doing his work on the mobile device in a disconnected mode At noon, the user may again synchronize with the server From the user's perspective, this second synchronization is within the same application context as the first one Most application servers, however, will be configured in such a way that three hours is actually more time than the period after which a session has expired So unless the application specifically takes care of this issue, it can be handled by persistent sessions Finally, another scenario that may favor persistent mode instead of a complete inmemory mode has to do with the expiration value Most Web applications deployed on 415.

WebSphere and other application servers are configured with a session expiration value of 15 to 45 minutes Because in the Web application model a user may simply close the browser without logging off the system, and because session objects are expensive resources that can consume large amounts of server memory, most Web applications assume that if a user is not actively using the system for a relatively short period of time, he can be kicked off This is usually true for e-business applications However, Web applications are now being used for all types of service, including those that serve internal as well as external users In some cases, system administrators are asked to make sure that users are not kicked off the system even if they are idle for a long time (In fact, we have had cases in which nine hours was requested!) In such a scenario, maintaining all session objects purely in memory can lead to thrashing or other problems in the server Let's go back to discuss cookies as a method for identifying a session Under the Session Manager page entry, you'll find the Default Cookie Settings page, which is shown in Figure 24-2
